Bottle Beach (also known as Haad Kruat, Haad Kruad and Haad Khuat)

Legendary Beach

Bottle Beach has a legendary status. Before Alex Garland wrote 'The Beach' people were catching longtail boats to this hidden gem of a beach that was surrounded by thick jungle where they would spend months 'chilling out' and living on a few dollars a day.

Since the late 1990s Bottle Beach has changed: Bottle Beach 1 has been joined by 2, 3 and 4. The bamboo thatched huts have been upgraded, and a rough road has been put in ending Bottle Beach's isolation. The bohemian and hippy vibe has been replaced by those looking to spend a little more money and wanting a bit more entertainment in the evening. What remains the same is the stunning beach and laid back atmosphere.

The beach is called Bottle Beach because the cove it lies in is in the shape of a bottle. The Thai for bottle is' Kruat' hence the beach is also called Haad Kruat ('kruad' and 'khuat' are alternative spellings). The beach is less than 1 km long. On either side are high cliffs with some excellent walking opportunities. The sea is great for year round swimming and often has small fish to spot.

Accommodation

There are four major accommodation providers on Bottle Beach. They are Bottle Beach 1, Haad Khuad Resort, Bottle Beach 2 and Smile Bunglows. They are all available to book online except Bottle Beach 2.

Bottle Beach 1 Resort is located beachfront in the center of the beach. It has fan and air-con rooms and also boasts a communal swimming pool. Haad Khuad Resort (formerly known as Bottle Beach III) has both wooden fan bungalows and concrete air-con bungalows on the beach. As it is a small beach the bungalows are fairly close together. Bottle beach 2 is an old-skool style bungalow resort on the east end of the beach. Smile Bungaows has cheap wwooden bungalows and family bungalows for rent. So far only Bottle Beach 1 has a swimming pool.

Travel

Most people arrive in Bottle Beach by boat. From Thongsala the quickest route is the road north to Chaloklum followed by a short longtail boat trip. You can usually find someone to share the cost of the boat. It is also possible to catch a boat from Thong Nai Pan to Bottle Beach. Most people leaving the beach take a 4 wheel drive taxi that goes via Thong Nai Pan Noi back to the port at Thongsala. For those that like hiking there is a trail that starts in Chaloklum goes past Haad Khom, on to Bottle Beach and then Thong Nai Pan. It is a hike that should be broken up. Bring water and suntan lotion and set off in the morning.
